The Position


Contra Costa County, Employment and Human Services Department is hiring for a Spanish Translator. Spanish Translators provide verbal, reading and writing translation or interpreting services as requested in Spanish. In this class Translators assist staff with clients who receive or apply for services from the Employment and Human Services Department. While the primary responsibility of incumbents in this class is providing translation and interpreting services, they may occasionally perform routine clerical tasks as directed.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Verbal translation of information to and from internal & external staff
  • Translation of written documents verbally, in the lobby or at reception windows as needed
  • Writing correspondence in a foreign language (Spanish) to clients as directed
  • Translation of forms and documents from English into Spanish
  • Clerical tasks and other related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Possession of high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time experience providing Spanish interpreting or translation services in a human service program, school environment, and/or business utilizing skills to speak, read and/or write fluently translating from English into Spanish and Spanish into English.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an environment that required you to convey sensitive or complex case information.

Selection Process

  • Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
  • Bilingual Performance Examination: Candidates that clearly demonstrate that they possess the required minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an in-person bilingual performance assessment. The assessment is designed to measure candidate's ability to communicate in Spanish, through speaking, reading, and writing. The assessment will also assess candidate's ability to listen and share information. Candidate must obtain a passing score, in order to advance in the recruitment process. (Weight 35%)
  • Virtual Oral Interview: Candidates that successfully achieve a passing score on the Bilingual Performance Examination will be invited to participate in a virtual oral interview. The interview is designed to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the Translator classification. Candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the competencies assessed, as well as an overall passing score of 70% of higher. These may include, but are not limited to: Professional & Integrity and Ethics, Attention to Detail, Delivering results, Valuing Diversity, Professional impact, and Teamwork. (Weight 65%)

The in-person Bilingual Performance Examination is tentatively scheduled to take place in Martinez, Ca between April 25, 2022 and April 27, 2022.

The Virtual Oral Interview is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) April 29, 2022 through May 3, 2022.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

After you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
