We are a non-profit Animal Shelter serving the North Texas area, and we provide care to dogs and cats until they are adopted into great homes. The Intake and Foster Coordinator facilitates the intake of dogs and cats to our shelter. They also support the Foster Care program.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Intake and Foster Manager; Collaborates with other Intake staff members, Medical, Kennel, and Client Service Department Managers.
POSITION OVERVIEW: This position is responsible for the intake of pets through the public. This includes owner surrenders, return adoptions, intake from local municipal shelters, other rescue groups, and stray animals. This position also supports the organization's current Foster Care program and assisting in the growth of these programs.

This position requires excellent customer service skills and documented experience working with the public in a variety of situations. Animal handling skills are strongly preferred.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Animal Intake Program

  • In collaboration with Intake and Foster Manager and other Intake/Foster Coordinators, determine daily intake numbers based on shelter capacity, animal variety and behavior and surgery schedule.
  • Evaluates animals based on temperament of animal and shelter needs, seeking to find opportunities to accept animals when possible
  • Reserves specific enclosures as needed for daily intakes.
  • Walks the kennels daily to determine weekly intake focus of breed, size, color variety, and available space.
  • Walk the kennels daily to ensure all animals have the correct kennel card and are in the correct stage.
  • Schedule with transfer partners for animal drop offs and animal pick-ups.
  • Coordinates with the medical and behavior staff on behavior assessments and medical assessments.
  • Works with staff and volunteers to ensure feeding, kenneling, are completed in a timely manner and expedite the intake process.
  • Engages with the public in a polite and effective manner and responds promptly to all intake requests even when shelter is at capacity.
  • Provides welcoming environment for all customers in need of placing their animal with Operation Kindness
  • Provides viable alternatives, when needed other than Operation Kindness to customers
  • Assists with animal check in, including providing vaccinations and drawing blood

Foster Program

  • Communicates with and monitors foster volunteers,
  • Assigns animals to foster homes
  • Maintains database on each fostered animal.
  • Assists shelter staff with selection of animals for each program.
  • Receives Communication from off-site adoption coordinator concerning needed animals for in-store adoption space.
  • Oversees and supports supplies for incoming fosters
  • Contributes to the growth of foster programs by assisting with recruiting new volunteers. Program include: Behavior Foster, Canine and Feline who are Nursing and Underage, Feline Behavior Foster, Sleepover for possible adoption and Owner Surrender Prevention Foster
  • Performs all other duties as assigned/required

General Responsibilities

  • Reports suspicion of animal abuse or neglect to Director of Animal Care, or CEO immediately.
  • Reports any unsafe working conditions to Director of Animal Care or CEO
  • Maintains client, donor, volunteer and staff confidentiality at all times.
  • Follows Standard Precautions and other safety regulations at all times.
  • Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as requested

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Proven prior experience handling dogs and cats strongly preferred
  • Proven customer service skills
  • Ability to read, write, speak English fluently. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus!
  • Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Proven organizational, detail-oriented and time management skills
  • Availability to work weekends
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be eligible to be a driver for Operation Kindness.
  • Proven knowledge and experience using Micro Soft Office products, Animal Care software experience a plus

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED, plus basic office and computer skills.
  • Experience Requirements
  • Minimum one year of experience working as a staff member or significant volunteer experience in an animal care environment (animal welfare organization, animal rescue/adoption organization, animal shelter or veterinary clinic) or other significant animal handling experience
  • Veterinary or shelter experience preferred

Physical demands and working conditions

  • Physical requirements include frequent lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds and greater with assistance, visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity. Walking and handling dogs and cat of a variety of sizes and temperaments.
  • Subject to climbing, kneeling, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking to perform the essential functions.
  • Working conditions are inside and on occasion outside with frequent exposure to temperature variations, chemicals, noises, unpleasant odors, confining work space and animal feces. Maybe exposed to bites, scratches, and zoonotic diseases.
